Review | THE FACE SHOP Rice Water Bright Light Cleansing Oil

Tuesday, July 09, 2019

When it comes to oil cleansers, I'm betting there are lots of you out there who still think that cleansing oils, balms, milks and creams can actually make your skin become oilier or worst, clogged pores due to these cleansers' oily texture but as someone who use oil-based cleansers as first cleanser in double-cleansing method for years, I can totally assure you that it's not true provided that you did not massage your skin for too long (4 minutes maximum!) and use water-based cleanser as second cleanser in your cleansing routine.

As I've mentioned before, there are several types of oil-based cleansers and this cleansing oil is actually the first Korean oil-based cleanser that I've tried and repurchased several times in between trying other cleansers in the market. so first thing first, let's go to basic details on this product.

Product Description:
Refreshing, brightening cleansing oil for oily to combination skin.
  • Brightening deep cleansing oil effectively cleanses away impurities and heavy makeup from skin with its light liquid texture.
  • Plant-based ingredients such as Rice Bran Oil and Jojoba Oil leave skin looking clean and bright.
  • Formulated without Mineral Oil
How to Use:
  1. Apply to dry skin, massaging in a circular motion to dissolve makeup.
  2. Rinse with lukewarm water.
  3. Wash-off with foam cleanser.
Capacity: 150ml

Ingredients list: Isopropyl Myristate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Polyglyceryl-10 diisostearate, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Water/Eau, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Saponaria Officinalis Leaf Extract, Parfum/Fragrance.

Packaging:

As shown above, the 500ml bottle is actually quite big, heavy and it comes with a basic cap that if you look at it rather closely, you’d noticed that I broke the cap as I accidentally dropped it on the floor. There’s product full description at the back of the bottle in both English and French for your convenience.

The expiry date is printed at the bottom of the bottle in YYYYMMDD (year-month-day) format.

APPLICATION

As mentioned in the product description, this cleansing oil is meant to remove daily makeup which to my understanding means tone-up sunscreens, cushion foundations and heavy waterproof makeup products therefore I'm going to show you guys how this mild cleansing oil works with some of the toughest waterproof makeup I have in my stash; mascara, matte liquid lipstick, liquid eyeshadow tint and cushion foundation.

This cleansing oil is indeed light in texture with a slight scent to it which doesn't bother me at all and definitely non-irritating to my skin.

I've dispensed some of the product directly onto the makeup (without adding water to it), usually 3 to 4 pumps for my whole facial area and massage my skin in circular motion for several minutes or until all the makeup melted off with it; the oil changes colour once it's mixed with the makeup.

Then, add some water to emulsify the oil; the oil helps to loosen the dirt off your skin and the emulsifiers (Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Polyglyceryl-10 diisostearate) contained in the product allow the oils to mix with water for you to easily rinse it off.

 THOUGHTS

As you can see in the above photo, the only makeup item that was not completely removed is the tint of the eyeshadow that is still left on skin but as for the rest of the makeup, not even the slightest hint can be seen so I do think this oil cleanser does its job quite well.

Overall, I give this product 4.5/5. I still do like this cleansing oil even after trying so many other oil cleansers in my K-beauty journey as it works well with my skin, removes my sunscreens and most of my makeup products as intended. Its light texture suits my dehydrated normal to oily skin indeed but I think this suits oily skin too.

Double-cleansing method does sounds a bit stretch but believe me, it's the best cleansing method that I've been practicing for years to remove daily applications of sunscreen and all kinds of makeup therefore if you still have not on board with this cleansing method, I hope you do give it a try maybe with a lightly textured oil cleanser like this one.

I guess that's all from me. Let me know your thoughts on this product by leaving comments down below. I'll see you guys on my next post. Annyeong~

Event | ARE YOU ‘THE FACE OF HEALTHY BEAUTY’? | 4 Finalists Selected at the Last Semi-Finals Held in Kota Kinabalu

Sunday, July 07, 2019

All 21 finalists posing on the stage.

Guardian Malaysia which is on a nationwide quest to find FOUR women, who best fit the bill as ‘The Face of Healthy Beauty’ held its last semi-final round in Kota Kinabalu today for the East Malaysia region.

After a hard-fought semi-finals where each of the 25 shortlisted semi-finalists had to go through challenges that display their aptitude and personality to deservedly earn the title ‘The Face of Healthy Beauty’, four finalists emerged to progress to the Grand Finals to be held in Kuala Lumpur on 27 July 2019.

The FOUR finalists from the East Malaysia region were (from left) Vanessa Yoong Foong Woon, Palvinder Kaur A/P Savinder Singh, Cruzellyn Alex and Elaine Audrey Lee.

Fitness instructor and fitness entrepreneur, Cruzellyn Alex, 42, was absolutely delighted to be picked as a finalist. A native of Kota Kinabalu, Cruzellyn was ecstatic and on top of the world about being picked.

She said she was attracted to the competition because of the emphasis on the word ‘healthy’ in the title of the contest. “I want to advocate a healthy lifestyle for everyone and that you can still live a healthy lifestyle without jeopardizing your own particular lifestyle. Many people think they live a healthy lifestyle but they don’t actually. So my objective for entering this competition is also so that my voice can be heard,” Cruzellyn said.

Meanwhile 28 year-old Pharmacist, Palvinder Kaur, didn’t expect to win at all and had entered the contest on the closing date for entries. She said the concept of the contest resonated with her as she practices a healthy lifestyle including doing daily workouts and being very particular about her food in addition to paying attention to her physical looks like taking care of her skin which she says must not be dry.

“This contest is really a reflection of my beliefs and I thought why not go for it and put yourself out there and try your best. Little did I know that I would be picked for the grand finals in Kuala Lumpur,” Palvinder said before taking a 7 hour bus ride from Kota Kinabalu back to Lahad Datu where she works in Hospital Lahad Datu.

More personal details on these first four finalists can be found on the contest microsite at https://theface.guardian.com.my.

At the launch of this nation-wide search in May this year, Soren Lauridsen, CEO, South East Asia, Guardian Health And Beauty Sdn Bhd said: “This search for The Face of Healthy Beauty is NOT a Beauty contest.

“In our books, the Healthy Beauty, is a person who lives life to the fullest in a healthy way, and has a distinctive style and pleasant personality. She is someone with a positive attitude, gives priority to being healthy first; and looks after her physical beauty too.”

Each winner will sign a one-year contract as Guardian Brand Ambassador that comes with RM10,000 cash, RM10,000 Guardian vouchers, and RM5,000 each for them to give to a charity organization of their choice. They will be featured on the Cover of Guardian’s Brand Catalogues and other collaterals and will receive products from participating sponsors

Soren explains that the Healthy Beauty concept is at the core of Guardian’s brand philosophy and that this concept was borne from a consumer insight that good health is the foundation of true beauty.

“We discovered that our customers believe that true beauty comes from a healthy physical and mental state of being,” Soren said.

By focusing on this consumer need since its very first store at The Weld 52 years ago, Guardian, has become the store to go to for health and beauty needs.

He said: “While these basic needs have remained, consumption trends have evolved driven by changing lifestyles and economic circumstances. Health and beauty are no longer as clearly defined as they used to be. They have been intertwined. Guardian too, has evolved. From being the health and beauty store, our mission now is to inspire our customers to live a healthy and beautiful life.”

“To achieve our mission, we have trained our team members to be beauty and health care advisors, while continuing to offer the latest and most innovative health and beauty products,” Soren added.

Touted as the first-of-its-kind in Malaysia, this search for ‘The Face of Healthy Beauty’ is open to all Malaysian females aged 18 years and above. Entries were submitted online at https://theface.guardian.com.my.

Participants needed to upload a 30 second video of themselves indicating ‘Why they want to be The Face of Healthy Beauty?’ or write in not more than 100 words why they want to be The Face of Healthy Beauty.

Contestants flexing their makeup skills in the makeover challenge at The Face of Healthy Beauty semi finals held in Kota Kinabalu.

One hundred (100) shortlisted participants were selected to attend each semi-final to be held at Johor Bahru City Square, Gurney Plaza Penang, Central i-City Mall Shah Alam and 1Borneo Hypermall Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Four semi-finalists from each region will attend the Grand Finals in Shah Alam on 27 July 2019.

In addition to the four winners, there will be eight category winners to be awarded by sponsors.  These are: Most Healthy (Blackmores), Most Elegant (Bio-essence), Most Youthful (Garnier), Most Expressive Eyes (L'Oréal), Most Passionate (Maybelline), Most Confident (Nivea), Most Cheerful (Safi) and Most Charming (TRESemmé)

Guardian customers can also vote, from 8 July – 24 July 2019 on the microsite, for their favourite finalist to win at the Grand Finals. The votes received for each finalist will contribute towards 50% of the total scores at the Grand Finals. Customers can earn more votes with purchases at Guardian. For one vote, no purchase is required; for 5 Votes, they need to purchase any item from Guardian and for 10 Votes, they need to purchase any participating sponsor brands in a single receipt.

If that particular contestant wins in the Grand Finals, then she will do a draw to pick her lucky voter. A total 4 draws will be done. Each Winner will pick 1 voter. The selected voter will be rewarded with RM500 worth of Guardian vouchers.

Furthermore, there is also a Scan & Win contest for customers from 10 June to 7 July 2019. QR codes will be placed in Guardian stores for customers to scan. After scanning the QR code, they just need to answer four questions related to healthy beauty. After answering, they will receive an instant voucher for their next purchase.

I guess that's all from me so I'll be seeing you guys on my next post! Take care!

Review | THE FACE SHOP Rice Water Bright Mild Cleansing Water

Tuesday, July 02, 2019

It's been over 5 years since I've started practicing double cleansing as part of my daily evening skincare routine where I'd be using oil-based makeup removers as the first step followed with a water-based facial cleanser hence double cleansing. In recent years, we are seeing lots of non-oil-based makeup removers like cleansing waters, micellar waters even cleansing tissues that don't seem to have oily ingredient in it and often do not require rinsing. That's quite convenient especially on those lazy nights where I'd be too exhausted to do proper cleansing but with most cleansing tissues or wipes often can be quite expensive for daily use, I'd most definitely recommend to go for huge bottles of cleansing water or micellar water.

When I first started using Korean skincare products years ago, I was all over THE FACE SHOP products and I've personally tried every single item from their Rice Water Bright cleansing line. Till today, I'll at least stock several of the cleansers in my skincare stash as back up even using them in between trying other cleansers from other brands and this cleansing water is one of the products that's recently launched; a new addition to the rest of its sisters that have been in the market for many years now but first, let's go to some basic info about this product.

Product Description:
This brightening cleansing water is formulated with carefully selected ingredients to gently remove daily makeup, leaving skin feeling clean.
  • The cleansing water contains carefully selected ingredients for gentle use on skin. Micellar water easily removes makeup and draws out impurities in one simple step-no rinsing required.
  • Simply cleanse and go or rinse with water as a finishing step.
  • It also contains rice extract to brighten your complexion.
How to Use:
  1. Dispense product on cotton pad and wipe skin from centre outwards to remove makeup.
  2. To remove lip and eye makeup, place soaked cotton pad on lips or closed eyes and hold for a few seconds then wipe.
  3. Rinse with water if necessary.
Capacity: 500ml (Available in 320ml)

Ingredients list: Water/Eau, Propanediol, C12-14 Pareth-12, 1,2-Hexanediol, Hexylene Glycol, Diethoxyethyl Succinate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hyaluronate, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Germ Extract, Sodium Citrate.

APPLICATION

If you’re not comfortable of having to dispense the product in regular way, I’d suggest for the product to be transferred into smaller bottle with reverse pump like that so all I need to do in order to dispense the cleansing water directly onto the cotton pad is to just push it down with.

I’d also prefer to use textured cotton pads as shown above to better trap the impurities and excess makeup.

As mentioned in the product description, this cleansing water is meant to remove daily makeup which to my understanding means tone-up sunscreens, cushion foundations and simple non-waterproof makeup products but I’m going to show you guys how this mild cleansing water works with some of the toughest waterproof makeup I have in my stash; mascara, matte liquid lipstick, liquid eyeshadow tint and cushion foundation.

I’ve dispensed some of the product on the cotton pad and I’ve placed it firmly onto the swatches of the makeup for a good 30 seconds before wiping it off in a single direction. Indeed, the cleansing water is mild, watery, has slight scent to it and definitely non-irritating to my skin.

 THOUGHTS

As you can see in the above photo, the only makeup item that was completely removed is the trace of the cushion foundation with only some of the mascara, the tint of the eyeshadow is still left on skin and as for the lipstick, not much of it removed by the cleansing water.

Therefore I’m going to say outright that I only use this mild cleansing water to remove non-waterproof makeup and daily sunscreens mostly for midday routine, sometimes as pre-cleanse in the evening or whenever I’m too tired to do my full routine, I’d be using the first round of cotton pad to remove all my makeup, the second round to ensure no trace makeup left on my face and then followed up with hydrating toner. I’d usually apply clay mask the next day so I don’t end up with severe blackhead situation.

Overall, I give this product 4/5. I do like this cleansing water as it works well with my skin, removes the sunscreens and simple, non-waterproof makeup products as intended. Although I don’t appreciate the cap, I do like the continuity in its packaging design yet this product comes with clear bottle showing the actual product.

I guess that's all from me. Let me know your thoughts on this product by leaving comments down below. I'll see you guys on my next post. Annyeong~

Review | LANEIGE Cream Skin Refiner

Thursday, June 13, 2019
Toners have come such a long way from being just a product that you use as the next step in cleansing. These days, you can find all kinds of toners out there, ranging from hydrating and exfoliating ones to soothing and mildly-formulated toners for acne-prone and sensitive skin. Just choose the right ones based on your skin concerns. I myself love layering different toners; from the most lightweight to the thickest in terms of texture. I always start with an exfoliating toner, especially in my evening skincare routine to remove dead skin cells and make way for the rest of my skincare products to be well absorbed.

However, my toner-layering method just stopped working when I had the worst allergic reaction that caused my skin to become red, irritated, and flaky, or so I thought. As it turned out, I needed to combine a moisturising toner with a stronger exfoliating toner; Glycolic Acid treatment to really smooth out the flaky skin. I've tried several different toners that are powered by Hyaluronic Acids, ceramides, and other hydrating ingredients, but I kept my options open. One day, I got my hands on a deluxe-sized sample of the Cream Skin Refiner from one of my favourite Korean skincare brands under AmorePacific, LANEIGE. I think it's safe to say that my search for a hydrating toner is over and I quickly got myself the full-sized product. Before I go further into this highly-raved skin care product, let's get to know it a little bit more.

Product Description:
A Cream that melts into a Skin Refiner. This hydrating skin refiner provides ample moisture to the skin at the very first step of skincare routine.

Capacity: 150ml

Ingredients:
Water / Aqua / Eau, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, 1,2-Hexanediol, Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Propanediol, Disodium Edta, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Tocopherol.

Packaging:

The Cream Skin Refiner comes in a pretty frosted glass bottle. Want to bring it along during your travels? Transfer some into a travel-friendly bottle to prevent accidental breakage.

There's simple product description printed on the back side of the box but also full description in the brochure that comes with every LANEIGE product.

Highlight on the ingredient; White Leaf Tea Water that's rich in amino acids that soothe the skin and reinforce the skin moisture barrier, making the skin truly healthy - which I have to agree!

Notice the sticker below there? I've received this from Hermo Malaysia so I'm assuming their stocks are from LANEIGE Malaysia.

The product features a unique cap that I have not encountered before. It has a lock system to prevent spillage, so make sure you twist the cap until you hear the 'click' sound. Notice the relief at the neck of the bottle?

The expiry date is printed at the bottom of the bottle in YYYYMMDD (Year-Month-Day) format.

APPLICATION

The toner has a milky-looking watery texture that felt nice on my skin. I always use cotton pads for first liquid-based product application after cleansing routine, but if I were to use first treatment essence, serum, or ampoule prior to this toner, then I would apply it by pouring a few drops into my palms and spread it well on my face.

THOUGHTS

Once applied, the toner slightly dries down and my skin felt so nicely hydrated. I followed up with thick-textured essence, serums, and/or ampoules after this toner; essentially the rest of my skincare routine. On lazy nights when I'm too exhausted to do my usual full routine, I'd be deep cleansing my skin and applying this toner several times before putting on a sleeping mask. I'd still be waking up with well-moisturised skin!

I didn't use the Cream Skin Refiner every day as I still love layering lightweight hydrating toners on daily basis. However, this toner is the only one I'd be using after every Glycolic Acid-infused product. The reason is because this toner really helps in replenishing moisture loss as glycolic acid can potentially dry out and irritate my skin. Thanks to the White Leaf Tea content (high in amino acid), it provides better moisturisation hence strengthens the skin barrier. I can totally tell that my skin is feeling much smoother.

I also love carrying this hydrating toner in the mini bottle (refilling it again and again!) in my office bag so I can replenish my moisture in my mid-day skincare routine; layers of this toner and reapply my sunscreen.

If you have normal to oily skin that's dehydrated like mine, a single layer of this toner would be suffice. If you have dry to normal skin, then I'd recommend layering this toner at least 2 times per application in your morning and night skincare routines.

Overall, I give this toner a 5/5! I love it; it works well with my dehydrated skin. Plus, it helps so much in repairing my skin when it was recovering from the flaky situation. Now that I'm about to finish my first bottle after about 2 months (at the time of this post), I'm glad that I purchased another one (and then some more) as backup.

Have you tried this lovely hydrating toner? Let me know your thoughts below in the comment section. Until next post, annyeong~

Blogger Mail | Hermo X Alkemie Superfruit Mask and Facial Oil

Saturday, May 18, 2019

I'll be honest, when I first got these two I was a little bit surprised as never have I ever heard of this brand before especially the brand's approach in using wash-off masks and facial oil; Western style of skincare that I haven't ventured much into actually. But still, I'm always open to try new skincare.

So yeah, look forward to my reviews on these sometime next week on Beauty Memo by Hermo! Let me know if you have tried any of the product from the brand by leaving comments down below. I'll see you guys on my next post!

Blogger Mail | Althea A'bloom Collection

Saturday, May 04, 2019

Oh, my god! I don't think I can be more excited when I've received this month's Althea Angels Mail! Just look at those cuties! Althea has launched a new brand under their Althea Exclusives and it's called A'bloom!

The first set of products under this uber-cute collection would be the sheet masks! Check them out!

Recipe for Sparkling Skin; Sheet Masks!

Bought 40 sheet masks and got another 40 for free during the launch event!

There are four variants; Nourishing Avocado "Avo-Cuddle-MeMask Sheet, Brightening Lemon Lime "Sparkle-Me-Bright" Mask Sheet, Moisturising Watermelon "Water-Me-Long" Mask Sheet and Anti-Blemish Peach "AC-Me-Peach" Mask Sheet. Even the names are cute, right? Thanks to Tammy @hellotammylim and her creative brain!

I've tried the Watermelon mask while I was on-board; coming here to KL for the The Butterfly Project 6th Birthday party last Saturday which I will update soon, and I gotta say that the moisture lasted quite long until later that day as I remember I don't have to powder my oily T-zone every few hours as per usual. As I was exhausted from such a long day, I merely deep-cleansed, toned, used the Lemon Lime mask before going to sleep and I still woke up with nicely bright and hydrated skin. After few days in this capital city, I've started to feel my skin slightly reacted to the heat and everything so that's when both of the Peach and Avocado mask came in. I used Peach in the morning; to tone down the redness I was having and Avocado last night as I'm feeling rather dry around my U-zone area; jawline and outer cheeks. I'm so glad that I woke up with a smooth, non-flaky skin this morning.

BHA Blackhead Blaster!

Now, I've only tried this product once so far and I haven't seen quite a visible result other than seeing how minimised my pores had become after using it and the area became smoother too! But as for blackhead situation I'm having around the tip of my nose, no improvement yet so I'm hoping to use this product some more before finalising my thoughts on it. Stay tuned for that!

Meringue Puffs!

Last but not least, these uber-cute beauty sponges that come in meringue-like shapes and pink pastel colours!

There are 2 sizes available; Giant and Baby! So far, I've used the big one to apply my sunscreen in the morning (dry) and a foundation that I bought from Innisfree yesterday (will update the application on Instagram soon!) and boy, I'd actually prefer the meringue puff over the free foundation brush! When damped, the meringue puff doesn't absorb the foundation as much and the finishing is actually quite good. Those baby meringue puffs are so nice as they reach all the curves around my facial area.

I guess that's all for now; these are pretty much my first impression of these new babies from Althea A'bloom. Looking at the design and attractive price points, I've got to say that the brand is targeting young millennials and of course, people like me who are in their 30s who still dig cute skincare products! LOL But overall, things are looking good as I definitely see myself repurchasing these in the future; those sheet masks are just great for morning routines and I probably not going back to the Original Beauty Blender after this. Hah!

All of these products are already available to purchase on Althea; links are down below and if you're new to Althea and planning to purchase more than RM150, use my link (click here!) for 20% discount off your first purchase!

I guess that's all for now and I'll be seeing you guys on my next post. Annyeong~
